Why was Russian language important earlier in Hungary? And why is it important today?
In the socialist era Russian language was taught for everyone as an obligatory subject because of political reasons. Budapest was a bastion of the Soviet Union, pushed forth to the West. The Russian language teaching was an instrument to make the idea of the international labour movement stronger. The knowledge of the Russian language was a scale of trustiness; those who know the language could get into a better position more easily.
In the countries of socialism went it without saying that Russian was the first foreign language, obligatory to learn.
The Western capital took note of the fact that Ukraine, the Baltic states, Russia and the other soviet ex-member states can be considered as a great buyer’s market. Russian knowledge means a big economical advantage again for both the West-European and the Hungarian investors. The importance of the Russian language grew as the economics got into a temporary crisis globally. One can sell products and services which became unsalable in the West on the Russian market. A properly trained and intelligent Russian language teacher should consider these viewpoints.
All these factors mean challenges and provide work for us, teacher.
Why is the command of Hungarian language useful?
English as the universal language is used as the first language in the international life of work. Despite, it is good for a foreigner if he can understand what it is spoken about around him. If his charge is prescribed for years, he will need Hungarian language not only when he makes phonecalls, or communicates with the workmates, but also in everyday life. A special, small language together with a universal language is really valuable. The Hungarian language is interesting and special; people are glad to learn it. It is important for the youngsters in order to get in touch with the others, to entertain, and to study the culture. Many Americans with Hungarian origins send their children and grandchildren on holiday to Hungary, because our unique culture can be "transferred" only in Hungarian.
Why is Hungarian language so beautiful?
The speciality of the Hungarian language originates from the fact that it does not belong to the Indo-European languages but to the Finno-Ugric language family. Thus, the structure of the Hungarian language is completely different. This causes difficulty for many learners, but they can be given a hint easily, and in a sense Hungarian language is easier than English or German is.
The good news is that in the Hungarian language:
- there are no grammatical elements
- there are no prepositions
- there is only one past and one future tense
- passive is used rarely
- pronunciation is quite similar to the written form
- In addition, we speak clearly and do not bite the endings of the words.
- Always the first syllable of the words is emphasized.
- Hungarian language is especially musical and rhythmical.
It is not a coincidence that the beginning is easier for the learners, who have a good sense of hearing, and for those who play a musical instrument. That is why I use poems and songs during teaching.
